Juliana Taken Alive

Juliana (White Bull) Taken Alive is Hunkpapa/Mnicoujou Lakota and an enrolled citizen of the Standing Rock Nation. She brings experiences in teaching, administration, instructional coaching, education policy in public and tribally controlled schools, student support services at tribal colleges, and Indigenous education consulting. She was the Standing Rock Education Consortium programs manager for the Standing Rock Tribal Education Department. Ms. Taken Alive manages the Growing Math project for the Strong Mind Strong Body Foundation and is involved in development of programs and curriculum for education and youth services, with a particular focus on Indigenous communities.

Juliana is also the former Director of the South Dakota Office of Indian Education where she did extensive work for the implementation of the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings through developing the statewide Wookiye Teacher Project. Her experience also includes managing Teacher Leadership Development for Teach for America in South Dakota. Her education includes: A.A. Sitting Bull College, Fort Yates, ND; B.S. Elementary Education-University of Mary, Bismarck, ND; and M.Ed. in Educational Leadership & Administration-Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD.

Juliana is a second-generation educator respectfully following the example of her father, Douglas White Bull Sr. (Teacher/Coach 40 Years-Retired). Juliana is married to Stephan Taken Alive (McLaughlin Elementary School-Dean of Students). Together they have five children: Peter (HS Science Teacher), Summer (Social Worker), Stephan Jr. (Specialist-US Army), Marcus (Graphic Designer), and Sage (Student-University of North Dakota).
