How Healthy Food and Culture Build Stronger Brains and Communities

Food isn’t just fuel. It’s culture, connection, and brain power.

In the latest podcast episode of Brain Health Solutions for All, youth journalists Elvin Rodriguez Perez and Kamille Wilson explore how nutrition and cultural food traditions shape brain development and strengthen communities across generations.

The youth hosts sat down with Dr. Michael Georgieff, an internationally recognized expert in pediatric nutrition and brain development at the Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain, and Vern DeFoe, the executive chef of Gatherings Cafe at the Minneapolis American Indian Center. Together, they unpack brain health, the power of culturally rooted foods, and community-driven solutions that help people of all ages thrive.

The conversation, recorded at the community media center SPEAK MPLS, delivered an important lesson. When communities reconnect with food, tradition, and shared knowledge, they build healthier brains, stronger relationships, and more resilient futures.

Dr. Georgieff explained why nutrition is one of the most powerful tools for building a stronger brain.

“If you think about all the things that happen in your life, all the things you want to do to make yourself better, nutrition is one of the most obvious ones that you can do something about,” he said. “It’s about putting your brain together and giving it the fuel to work well in school, at your job, or in life.”

DeFoe emphasized the role of culturally rooted foods in fostering health and community.

“In Native culture, everything is connected — spirituality, food, life teachings,” he said. “Harvesting wild rice or tapping maple trees brings families and communities together, and it strengthens our bonds.”

The episode also explored practical, realistic steps youth and families can take. Dr. Georgieff recommends starting the day with grains to provide steady energy for the brain, while DeFoe encourages cooking together and gradually replacing processed foods with fresh, whole ingredients.

“It’s about learning how to grow your own food, learning how to cook it, and participating in cultural food traditions,” DeFoe said.
